What is Lip Blush?
Semi-permanent makeup
If you love the subtle touch of color that lip tints provide without the worry of smudging, you might want to consider lip blushing. Despite its cute name, lip blushing is essentially a form of lip tattooing—but don't let that intimidate you. While permanent makeup has been around for ages, this modern treatment not only enhances and corrects lip color but also improves shape and definition.
Lip blushing is a type of semi-permanent makeup where individuals aim to refresh the color of their lip borders or the entire lip area, as we age, it's common to lose pigment in our lips and lip lines. This loss of color and definition leads many women to use lip liner to make their lips appear fuller. This treatment results in a very natural look once it’s healed. While fillers are great for adding volume, lip blush offers a more natural appearance and creates the illusion of fuller lips.
What to Expect From Your Lip Blush Appointment at The Wink Lab
Pout Prep
Your appointment at The Wink Lab, located in both West Chester and Phoenixville, begins with a preparation phase to ensure your comfort. A topical anesthetic is applied to your lips for about 20 minutes to numb the area. Following this, the technician will outline the new shape of your lips, allowing you to review and suggest any changes.
Custom Color Selection
Each lip blush procedure at The Wink Lab is personalized. We customize and mix colors for each client after assessing their natural base color. Every artist has their own approach to selecting shades. We usually recommend staying close to your natural color range to maintain a natural look.
The Procedure
The actual procedure can take anywhere from one to one and a half hours, sometimes longer, depending on the desired outcome. During this time, the technician will carefully apply the chosen color to your lips.
Aftercare
After your appointment, you might experience some swelling since it is a tattooing process. Applying ice can help reduce this. In the following week, your lips will go through a healing process, which may include some scabbing. It's crucial to plan your appointment so that the healing period fits well with your schedule.

After-Care for Lip Blushing at The Wink Lab
Proper after-care is essential for achieving the best results from your lip blushing procedure. Here’s a detailed guide to help you through the healing process:
Immediate Care
For the first 24 hours, I advise my clients to gently blot their lips with a wet cotton pad and let them air dry,” says Son. “This helps keep the lips clean and removes any body fluids that have surfaced, preventing them from forming scabs.”
Managing Scabs
Scabs are a normal part of the healing process, but it’s crucial that they fall off naturally. Picking at them can lead to scarring or loss of pigment in those areas. To protect your lips:
- Avoid workouts and sun exposure for two weeks.
- Wait a full month before getting any injections.
- Avoid sleeping on your face to prevent premature scab removal.
Moisturization
An occlusive ointment like Aquaphor should be worn to keep the lips properly moisturized. This helps to maintain hydration and support the healing process.
Color Changes
Initially, the color of your lips will be very vibrant, similar to a lip stain. “It is important not to be misled by the immediate ‘after’ results. The immediate results look nothing like when the lips are healed. Once healed, the color fades approximately 30-50 percent and blends in with the natural lip color,” Son explains.
By following these after-care steps, you’ll ensure your lip blushing results are as beautiful and lasting as possible. For more personalized advice and care, visit us at The Wink Lab in West Chester and Phoenixville.
Everything You Need to Know About Lip Blushing at The Wink Lab
How Long Does Lip Blushing Last?
Like any cosmetic procedure, lip blushing requires maintenance. Ensuring a smooth healing process involves not picking the scabs off your lips and keeping them hydrated with products like Aquaphor. Once the desired result is achieved, patients may need touchups on a yearly basis,” —essentially, it’s similar to the maintenance required for microblading your brows.
Can Lip Blushing Make Your Lips Look Bigger?
While lip blushing does not physically enlarge the lips, it can enhance their appearance. Generally, we love to make the cupid’s bow a little more pronounced and add fullness to the sides of the lips, as sometimes the natural color is lost in those areas. Once the client is happy with the shape, we begin the actual tattooing of the lips. Although lip blushing does not make the lips actually larger, one perceives them to be bigger—just like makeup. It gives a plumper appearance or a more defined look. We must view it as a semi-permanent form of makeup.”
Are There Cons to Lip Blushing?
Like any procedure, lip blushing has its downsides. The biggest con to lip blushing is if it’s not done appropriately, it could appear fake looking. This highlights the importance of doing thorough research and choosing a skilled technician.
Other considerations include:
Cold Sores/Herpes: If you have a history of cold sores or herpes, the procedure could trigger an outbreak. It’s recommended to take prescribed antiviral medication before the appointment. Cold sores can affect the healed results of the lip blush
Unpredictable Results: There’s no absolute guarantee on how your lips will look post-lip blushing. It’s better to go gradual with shading to avoid uneven fading or results that you may not like.

Microblading and tattooing are similar, but microblading is more of a cosmetic pigment treatment. It uses a handheld tool with fine needles to create realistic hair strokes. Powder Brows, a similar technique, uses a digital device or tattoo machine with a single needle and is great for thick or oily skin and correcting old tattoos.
Both methods enhance natural brows by filling in gaps and extending tails.
